Jacksonville to Pere Marquette State Park and Beyond

When: August 15, 2009 10:45 a.m. Leaving Jacksonville at 11:00 a.m.

Where: Coming to Jacksonville on I-72 take the second Jacksonville exit that would be Exit #64 turn North on IL 267 and proceed 3/10 of a mile and turn into the Clark Station/Convenience Store, we will meet you there.

What: We will drive approximately 50 miles to the Illinois River and take a free car ferry to Kampsville, IL for lunch at Louie’s Kampsville Inn. They have a varied menu with fish being their specialty. They do not take charge cards they do have an ATM on site, they also don’t take reservations on weekends but Saturday shouldn’t be a problem they will know we are coming. After lunch we will head South playing hide and seek with the river until we reach Hardin, we will cross back over the river on a bridge and head towards Pere Marquette State Park, we will stop at the visitor’s center to look around and use the restrooms if needed. We will drive up into the park to a scenic lookout, where you can view the Illinois River joining the Mississippi River. Leaving the park we will head towards Grafton where we will drive up on the bluff to a winery where you will be standing 253 feet above the 1993 flood cres t. The view is fantastic (weather permitting you can see all the way to St. Louis & St. Charles, MO along with Alton, IL) and the wine samples aren’t bad either.

After heading back down the bluff we will proceed towards Alton along a divided 4 lane road nestled between the bluff and the mighty Mississippi River. From just before the Park to Alton is approximately a 22 mile drive with great scenery and river views all along the way.

Once in Alton we will head towards home where ever that may be, will have maps and directions to help you out. Contact Wayne and Patty White at jwwhite703@verizon.net with any questions you might have and let us know by August 13 if you plan to come so we will have head count for Louie’s. Hope you can make it!

The fifth annual Porsches 2 Oxford (Ohio) event, hosted by Mid-Ohio Region of PCA, will be on Saturday, July 25, 2009. The P2O website provides all the information regarding registration, lodging, events, etc. Approximately 500 Porsches are anticipated to be on display this year. Jim Anderson and I attended last year and it was fantastic! There were just under 400 cars from 17 states and Canada, everything from Gmund coupes, to 356s, 550 Spyders, every iteration of 911, 914s, 928s, 944s, 968s, 986s and 987s, plus Mike Valentine's Carrera GT and a documented 908 race car valued at $1M! Oxford, home of Miami of Ohio University, is the quintessential college town, and the people there really support PCA and the event. Check out the website and contact Brice Kadel for more information. This would be a great event for LTR members to attend, as it is fairly close (just inside Ohio, over the Indiana border), very accessible and the area around Oxford has some great, glass smooth and twisty primary and secondary roads. If any LTR member has questions, please contact me via email (ronin154@yahoo.com) or at 309.385.1613 after 6:00 PM M-F, or anytime over the weekend. Hoping to see you at P2O 2009!!!
